Female genital mutilation: This needs to stop.

I think it is pretty obvious to know what Female Genital Mutilation is just by looking at the name. I’m going to refer this to FGM for short.

FGM is a procedure which involves the cutting of the external female genitalia. This is practiced in 28 countries in the eastern, western, north eastern Africa, and in parts of Asia and the Middle East. It has been estimated that 140 million women and girls around the world has experienced this procedure including 101 million in Africa. FGM is usually carried out during the age of four, and puberty. Although in some extreme cases, this procedure can be conducted on younger infants and adults. This is normally performed without anesthesia by using a knife, razor or scissors.

You now know WHAT happens in this procedure, what about HOW girls feel after this is done? Well once a girl has gone through this procedure she can no longer experience sexual pleasure during intercourse. FGM is a social convention, FGM is an oppressive, backwards, dangerous procedure which should be banned all around the world.

FGM has the highest rates in countries such as Sudan, Somalia, Mauritania, Ethiopia, and Djibouti. There has been a lot of speculation as to whether the Quran plays a major role in this procedure or whether it is actually down to culture and tradition. If we read the conversation with Muhammed and Um Habibah (or Um ‘Atiyyah). This woman, known as an exciser of female slaves, was one of a group of women who had immigrated with Muhammed. Having seen her, Muhammad asked her if she kept practicing her profession. She answered affirmatively, adding: “unless it is forbidden, and you order me to stop doing it.” Muhammed replied: “Yes, it is allowed. Come closer so I can teach you: if you cut, do not overdo it, because it brings more radiance to the face, and it is more pleasant for the husband.”

Several Islamic scholars have condemned this practice, whilst others have said that FGM is obligatory and is an honorable act. From my judgment, I don’t believe that the Quran plays a major part in FGM but the varied interpretations taken by men and women does which is why I am placing my anger towards this issue here. Surveys from 2005 in Gamian showed that nearly every women deemed FGM as a normal practice. Most women believed that FGM is a obligatory due to their cultural and religious beliefs. When asked why this was, there was responses such as ” the clitoris is considered to be “dirty” or “Women fear that they cannot find husbands for their daughters if they have not been mutilated; many believe men prefer sex with a mutilated wife”

Oh really? What a logical thought… You know what ladies, let’s cut each other’s clitoris because it’s the right way to gain a husband!

Bullshit.

FGM is practiced around the world because it is thought to be a necessary part of raising a girl properly, it teaches girls the concept about “modesty” and “purity” as it “helps” her to resist illicit acts. FGM prevents the rights for a woman to make her own choices about sexual enjoyment and pleasure. When will this monstrous act end? When will the brutality against WOMEN end? Why is the concept of “modesty” and “purity” only preached to women only? Why are we unequal to men when it comes to sex? Is it wrong that women can enjoy sex? Give me one good reason why this is so. Why is this such a crime for women but it isn’t for men? Once again this goes back to patriarchy; the extreme control of women’s bodies as it is the “right thing to do”. Mutilation is not required by any religion. It is a tradition devised to preserve virginity, ensure marriageability, and contain sexuality. Is it so wrong for women to enjoy sex just as men do? What’s even more striking is that FGM is practiced by WOMEN. Why do women fall into the trap of double standards, We are already suppressed, and belittled by men, why do women continue to oppress other women? WOMEN, forget this “your body is a temple” crap and get to the basics, your body is YOUR body, which means, it is YOUR choice to do whatever you want with it. If men believe they can preach about purity for women whilst having several sexual partners behind closed doors why do we need to commit to their hypocrisy? FGM needs to be spoken about everywhere, more women needs to understand that FGM is NOT okay; It is destructive and distressing, since when do we need to harm ourselves for the approval of men?

Patriarchy, misogyny and ignorance can go to hell.

I ask out of curiosity – why should female genital mutilation be considered here and not genital mutilation in general? After all, male genital mutilation (namely, circumcision) is still prominent and is probably far larger in scale than female genital mutilation. Great blog though – calling it misogynistic may be a stretch too far, methinks, but other than that, it’s definitely an issue that should be raised.

    • Yes I understand where you’re coming from but that is not male mutilation, it is male circumcision, is the cutting of the outer skin. Female mutilation is much different, and much extreme as it leads to illness, and death. I called it misogynistic, because this tradition is based on those values, but thank you for your view 🙂

great! however, trying to stop FGM, is like trying to stop MALE circumsicion. ITS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. — tradition — well.. lets just call it ignorance.
